Book Review: Your Next Five Moves

Your Next Five Moves
Your Next Five Moves: Master the Art of Business Strategy
Patrick Bet-David
Rating: 5/5

David shared lots of his experiences - success or failed in this writing. informative strategies and advices to accelerate your career or business. This book is especially for those to-be entrepreneur, or startup, or even if you are a team lead or managers. The 5 moves: Knowing Yourself, Ability to reason, Building the team, Strategies to scale, Power Plays, is a progressive advices when you are in different stage of your business.

The 5 Key Moves from the book:
1. Knowing Yourself: Self-awareness, understand yourself, who you want to be, what you want to achieve, what motivates you? list down the motivations - who put high expectation on you, who look you down when you are nothing. What is your best skills that you can convert into attributes to accelerate your career.
2. Ability to reason: Learn to process issue, get the main causes instead of hanging around for scapegoat. Ask few times WHY to get to the correct keywords. I do this a lot, until I get the key info, and I will let them know “this is the key info” so they understand what I’m seeking. That’s really a useful chaining question, although they might be annoyed, but our goals is always to resolve an issue better.
3. Building the team: get the right people, get someone to leave when he/she not fit. It might not means that they are bad when you ask someone to go, they may be just don’t fit your culture, or pace, or even the nature. I heard a lot junior told me “I’m a programmer, because I got no choice.” People often choose ‘what should I work as’ instead of ‘what I love to be’. There are for sure you have friends that don’t like their jobs that applied using their Degree cert, and it’s a fortunate if someone told them “I think this is not your passion”. I told this to my younger brother 10 years ago for the first time, who started his University for Game Developer courses for 2 semesters. and he is now running his own Salon. Help people find the best in themselves, you can build a team that will help you grow.
4. Strategies to scale: consider different aspects to scale your business, either partner, capital, create systems. The quote in this book “What brought us here won’t take us to the next level.”. We need to keep improving to move on to the next stages.
5. Power Plays: Beat the Goliath in your industry. Before this, make sure you’ve prepared to control your narrative and leverage social media productively to frame your story. So you have a ready platform to refute any rumor or break the accuse.

I really enjoy this book so much! I know that even we got these advices, sometimes most of us still want to get a try on our own even someone told us it would failed. I seen some of the ratings mentioned they don't like this book due to the MLM author, for me, I prioritize key takeaways from the reading, instead of the personal life of the author.

Sometimes back I’ve a chance working with a “used-to-be-gangster” guy, it’s surprise me that he could ignore any ego or emotion challenge from the opposite who is not intended to cooperate. He said: the discussion is not to tackle their ego or emotion, is how can we move on the topic. As such, his concern is the content of the conversation and if the opposite sincere in moving on.

As mentioned in the book: ”Everyone has something to teach you.”

A highly recommended reading!

Quotes:
  • One of the things I love so much about business is that there’s a path for everyone—as long as you have self-awareness and the willingness to think five moves ahead.
  • This is your show. If you change yourself and focus on who you want to be, nothing can stop you.
  • Find a way to process by taking responsibility. Take a deep breath and remind yourself that these are the moments that separate winners from losers.
  • When you’re in a hole, stop digging.
  • If you’re going to lose, don’t lose the lesson. Again, you’re going to use experiences to become either bitter or better.
