《The Daily Stoic》

The Daily Stoic: 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance, and the Art of Living
Ryan Holiday, Stephen Hanselman

  • Knowledge—self-knowledge in particular—is freedom.
  • Willingly accept what’s outside your control.
  • The only thing you truly possess is your ability to make choices
  • Know why you do what you do—do it for the right reasons.
  • Just begin the work. The rest follows.
  • One morning at a time, over the course of a life.
  • It’s not because these men are cheap. It’s because the things that matter to them are cheap.
  • The more things we desire and the more we have to do to earn or attain those achievements, the less we actually enjoy our lives—and the less free we are.
  • You need to wake up right now instead of creating a nightmare.
  • “If I know how you spend your time,” he said, “then I know what might become of you.”
  • With power comes responsibility.
  • We buy things we don’t need, to impress people we don’t like.
  • No one should be ashamed at changing his mind—that’s what the mind is for.
  • Don’t ruin your streak.
  • What if you read the few great books deeply instead of briefly skimming all the new books? Your shelves might be emptier, but your brain and your life would be fuller.
  • Today, not tomorrow, is the day that we can start to be good.
  • Will you be part of the problem or part of the solution?
  • But so long as your flame flickers, there will be some light in the world.
  • We can’t forget that although theories are clean and simple, situations rarely are.
  • RESPECT THE PAST, BUT BE OPEN TO THE FUTURE
  • Life is long if you know how to use it.
  • Many times an old man has no other evidence besides his age to prove he has lived a long time.
  • Your own experiences have value. You have accumulated your own wisdom too. Stake your claim. Put something down for the ages—in words and also in example.
  • We don’t receive a short life, we make it so.
