You Can Negotiate Anything: How to Get What You Want
by Herb Cohen
5/5

There is a lot of important values written in this book, to be frank there are some that I can’t agree too, but I pick the take away within my threshold.

Attitude matter, be polite

When you try to negotiate, make sure you've the right attitude. Can’t be you trying to get something from others yet still with cursing face. Important notes: the moment you show your urge and attitude, you are losing your negotiation position.

Determine the high or long term value

You negotiate only when you believe that there will be higher value returned, it’s not recommended to spent your 2 hours to negotiate a $1 discount.

Win-win negotiation

Provide a return value to opponent, what would they get in return by offering you what you are asking for, it can’t work when your proposal is fully sided only to your best interest. So, present your value and earn yourself the negotiation credits.

There is always an exception

We’ve been hearing this too much. “This is a fixed price” “No it’s common practice, it only can be done this way” You understand it right, these statements are to stop you from negotiate or debate. But as a Chinese metaphor 人是活的 书是死的 referring to rules are dead but human are not. Means everything can be arranged even it’s being written in a rules book. So why not stand firm a little more for what you believe, you may get a surprise returns.

Timeline and urgency

Deadline or urgency is something that causing you to close the deal as soon as possible. When I’m desperate in getting a new iPad, I might choose to cart out now instead of waiting for year end new released. When I’m desperate in reading a book, I might cart out now at price $14.99 instead of waiting for their $3.99 promotion that would happen once a year. The moment you show your urgency, the opponent also stay grounded with their position. Because they knew you got no other choice.

Many more…this book is a high value reading, it provides perspective and advices that avoid yourself stumble into negative position when you are involve in a negotiation. If you are loosing your position, then the opponent is gaining theirs.

Valuable reading. highlight recommended.

Only if you, as a unique individual, can answer yes to all three of these questions
  • You should always have a sense of mastery over your situation. Pick and choose your opportunities based upon your needs.
